Five Keyword Field Mistakes That Quietly Waste Your ASO Budget

The keyword field is invisible to users, so it gets filled once and never reopened. Five mistakes that waste it, what each one costs, and why its value sits in the long tail.

There is a field in App Store Connect you have probably opened twice. Once when you shipped, once by accident. It sits under the title and subtitle, it never appears on your product page, and no user has ever seen it. That is exactly why it gets treated as paperwork: paste in a block of words from a keyword tool, save, close the tab, move on.

This invisible field keeps working, and most ways of filling it are wasteful. Five mistakes, what each costs, and the order I would check.

The short version

Five Keyword Field Mistakes That Quietly Waste Your ASO Budget — The short version

The keyword field does one job: it tells the search index which terms should surface your app beyond the words already sitting in your title and subtitle. It does not touch your screenshots, rating, tap-through rate, or retention. It is not a second title.

Here is the reframe most teams miss. This is not where you win the big head terms. Those rankings are shaped by your title, subtitle, conversion, retention, and whoever else wants the same slot. A hidden text field will not move that much.

What it is good at is the long tail: three and four word combinations with modest volume and sharp intent, plus misspellings and regional spellings nobody puts in a title. Small terms, taken one at a time. That is the job.

Mistake one: repeating the title and subtitle

The index reads your title, subtitle, and keyword field together. A word already in your title does not gain weight because you typed it twice. It just takes space that could have held something new.

The test takes two minutes. Break your title and subtitle into single words, cross those out, and look at what is left in your field. Most teams find a large share of it is duplicated. That share is budget spent on nothing.

Mistake two: competitor brand names

The most common shortcut, and the most expensive. The logic sounds fine: search a competitor, my app shows up too. Two things go wrong.

First, compliance. A brand name is someone else's asset, and how stores treat that inside metadata varies and shifts; apps do get challenged over it. Check the current official guidance before you ship, and do not treat last year's tolerance as this year's permission.

Second, conversion. A person searching a specific app name wants that app. You are an interruption. Some tap in out of curiosity, install, and leave when it is not what they wanted. You paid in risk and characters for users who were never going to stay.

Mistake three: spaces are not a phrase operator

People write `photo editor collage` and assume the store matches the whole string. It does not. The index splits on spaces and treats each word as its own term. You did not buy a phrase. You bought three words.

Not fatal, since those words still get indexed, but know what you got. Phrase matching is influenced by word order in your title and subtitle, where a run of words reads as a unit. The field is a bag of words, not a sentence.

So stop spending characters re-creating phrases. Write the words that matter, once each, and let the title carry the phrasing.

Mistake four: padding with plurals and near-synonyms

Plurals are usually normalized by the index. Typing both `editor` and `editors` rarely earns two entries. It burns characters.

Misspellings are worth keeping, but only the ones people actually type, plus local spellings that matter in your markets. Not every typo you can imagine.

The real waste is the synonym pile. `cheap`, `budget`, `affordable`, `lowcost` all go in, and the field turns into a thesaurus with no center. Those words carry different intent and volume. Mixing them blurs what your app is for.

One question per word: would a real person type this into a search box on its own? If the honest answer is no, delete it.

Mistake five: chasing traffic you cannot hold

`ai`, `photo`, `video`, `fitness`. Big words, everyone wants them.

Say you make a niche film-grain camera app and you put `photo` in the field. You get impressions from people looking for something else entirely. They install, open it, find a grain simulator where they expected a full editor, and close it. Some leave a rating on the way out.

That is a negative signal, worse than no exposure. The field is supposed to route the right searches to you, not every search.

The test: would someone searching this word look at my app and think this is it? If the answer is maybe, leave it out. Maybe is a no.

When the field cannot save you

Three cases where another pass at this field is a wasted evening.

Your positioning is wrong. If the problem your app solves, the audience it is built for, and the promise your title makes do not line up, no keyword list fixes that. It adjusts what you are indexed for, not what you are.

You are trying to lift conversion. Users never see the field. Tap-through is decided by the icon, the first screenshot, the rating, and the opening line of the title. If conversion is the problem, that is where the work is.

Your page cannot hold the traffic. Correct terms can bring the right people. If the screenshots and copy do not close them, the field did its job and you still lost. In all three cases the fix lives upstream: product, positioning, page.

What to do next

1. Dump the field. Copy the current contents, list the words from your title and subtitle, cross out the overlap. Whatever survives is what you are buying. 2. Delete competitor names today. No test, no debate. It is risk without a return you can defend. 3. Break the phrases apart. Kill duplicated plurals and synonym piles, and keep the single words a person would really type. 4. Add a handful of long-tail combinations and real misspellings, then write down what you changed and when. Next time you open this field, you will not remember why.
